Every orthodontic patient goes through an initial adjustment period after their appliances are first placed. The first few days of wearing braces are usually the most challenging. During this time, it is common to experience general soreness in the mouth, and your teeth may feel sensitive to biting pressure. Depending on the type of appliances, it may also take a week or two for your lips, cheeks, and tongue to adapt. It is important to remember that this discomfort is temporary and will gradually subside.
To help you manage this short-term discomfort, our office will provide several helpful tips and remedies. These techniques can also be used during any brief periods of soreness that may occur after future adjustment appointments. If you have traditional braces, we will give you orthodontic wax along with instructions on how to apply it to any bracket or wire that may be causing irritation.
