Glastonbury Orthodontics | Comprehensive Orthodontics, Orthodontic Appliances and Adult Orthodontics

In addition to braces or clear aligners, various orthodontic appliances may be used throughout treatment. These appliances are designed to address specific needs and may be either fixed (attached to the teeth) or removable (can be taken in and out of the mouth by the patient).

Fixed Appliances

These are securely attached to the teeth and remain in place until your orthodontist removes them. They are often used for continuous, long-term correction and may be recommended to:

  • Widen the jaws to create space for permanent teeth
  • Influence jaw growth in younger patients
  • Reduce deep overbites
  • Correct teeth in crossbite
  • Maintain space for permanent teeth when a baby tooth is lost early
  • Make minor tooth movements
  • Control harmful oral habits (such as thumb sucking)

Removable Appliances

These appliances can be taken out by the patient for eating, brushing, or special occasions. They are typically used in less complex cases or as part of early intervention treatment. Removable appliances can help with:

  • Minor tooth movement
  • Guiding jaw growth
  • Maintaining space after the early loss of baby teeth
  • Reducing deep bites or correcting crossbites
  • Habit control (e.g., thumb sucking or tongue thrusting)

Your orthodontist will determine the most effective type of appliance based on your unique treatment goals and oral development.
