White spots during braces

How do I prevent white spots during orthodontic treatment?
Good oral hygiene is crucial during orthodontic treatment. Some people think braces are the reason behind decalcification (white spots) but that is not the case. Decalcification is the result of bad brushing and flossing habits. When the teeth are not properly cared for, food and plaque buildup may attach around the braces. The acidity of the plaque starts to weaken the tooth enamel over time leaving the white spots behind. This can even lead to cavities. These white spots are not reversible but not to worry they can be prevented by following a few simple tips.
What is decalcification (white spots)?:
Decalcification are white spots that develop due to plaque and food buildup from not brushing and flossing well.
Keeping your teeth clean with braces:
• Rinse your mouth to get rid of debris left in mouth from food.
• Make sure your toothbrush is clean and replace it every three to four months.
• Brush all surfaces of the teeth including front, back and chewing surface.
• Brush for at least two minutes.
• Use your interproximal brush to get any spots that may have been missed by your regular toothbrush.
• Floss on both sides of each tooth to get rid of any food trapped between the teeth.
Here are some tips for good oral hygiene and preventing decalcification (white spots):
• Brush 3 time a day and floss at least once a day.
• Keep up with your regular dental visits.
• Stay away from soda and other foods that are high in sugar.
• Use the prescription strength fluoride toothpaste that we recommend against white spots.
